The Republic of Moldova, with the support of the European Union, is ready to develop a competitive economy, implement entrepreneurial eco-innovations, apply new technologies and environmentally friendly methods to produce goods. Moldovan agricultural and industrial companies have the greatest potential for implementing eco-innovations. The statements are included in a study carried out by the Organisation for the Development of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (ODIMM) in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

According to the report presented today at a Workshop, the wine and textile industries need to be supported as a matter of priority to implement eco-innovative elements and overcome the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This study is to be complemented with some suggestions from experts and workshop participants and, once all fundamental aspects have been completed, will be published for common access.

Minister for the Economy, Sergiu Gaibu emphasised the importance of a professional, research-based and analysis-based approach to greening business.

“We have many problems with ecology and that is why, together with the Ministry of Environment, we have started new programmes focusing on the economy and the environment. Extensive research is needed to generate practical and workable regulatory solutions and regulations. At the moment, we have a number of laws, declaratory rather than functional, and we need to intervene with practical and useful actions for the business environment, both in terms of economic and environmental performance. We want to support and incentivise those entrepreneurs who are ready to operate with minimal waste, which will lead to greater economic efficiency and a significant minimisation of negative environmental impacts”stated the Minister.

Dumitru Pîntea, ODIMM Acting Director, stressed the importance of implementing innovations in the business environment, which bring added value, pretence and sustainability to domestic businesses.

“ODIMM, through the support instruments in the portfolio, supports and promotes the valorisation of new technologies in the business environment in the Republic of Moldova. We will continue to push for the diversification of the entrepreneurial support range, which will aim to implement eco-innovations in economic activity”.

Eco-innovation is any innovation that stimulates progress by reducing environmental impacts, making nature more resilient to environmental pressures or achieving efficient and responsible use of natural resources.

ODIMM and UNEP have set out, through the European programme EU4Environment, to support Moldovan SMEs in developing eco-innovative business models. Under this partnership, several activities aimed at promoting the concept of eco-innovation and raising awareness of the benefits and opportunities for sustainable development of the business environment in the Republic of Moldova were jointly carried out throughout the years 2021-2022.
