New criteria for the award of SME status
The number of local companies operating in SMEs increased by about 800. This is due to the recent amendments approved and entered into force in the Law on Small and Medium-sized Enterprises which provide for doubling the turnover ceilings for defining the status of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.
Legislative adjustments, connected to European experience, offer the possibility for the 800 enterprises to benefit from opportunities for entrepreneurship support from the State through the support programmes in the ODA portfolio.
New criteria for the award of SME status:
- micro-enterprises are the firms that employ at most 9 employees and earn an annual turnover of up to lei 18 million or hold total assets of up to lei 18 million.
- small-sized enterprises will have at most 49 employees, have an annual turnover of up to lei 50 million or hold total assets of up to lei 50 million;
- medium-sized enterprises are regarded as firms with at most 249 employees and reporting an annual turnover of up to lei 100 million or holding total assets of up to lei 100 million.
According to data provided by the National Statistics Office, in 2021 the number of SMEs constituted 59400.
