On 2 October, the International SME Conference with the generic “SME – Path to European Performance” took place.

1It was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Andrian Candu, Minister of Economy, Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, Pirkka Tapiola, representatives of state institutions and business.

Vice Prime Minister Andrian Candu stressed the importance of the SME sector for a sustainable economic development of the country. He expressed his conviction that the combined efforts of business and the public sector can capitalise on the productive and creative potential of SMEs.

In the immediate future, through the joint efforts of all partners, we need to identify the most effective support solutions to increase the innovative potential of SMEs and facilitate their internationalisation process, by finding the best credit instruments, by building technological capacity and by interconnecting with representative associative structures at European level.“, he also mentioned Andrian Candu.

The Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova, Pirkka TAPIOLA, welcomed the participants in Romanian and mentioned that this conference takes place not only in the context of the European SME Week, but especially in the context of the new opportunities created, the opening up of international markets, new assistance programmes and economic integration between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova.2

The development of the SME sector is the foundation of a sound economy and a prosperous country. Countries that chose European integration succeeded in developing the middle class, leading to economic growth“, said Pirkka Tapiola.

Ms Iulia Iabanji, Director-General of ODIMM, mentioned that International SME Conference “SME – Path to European Performance” is organised in the context of European Week of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME). In the Republic of Moldova, the initiative is supported annually through a series of large public events in Chisinau and most district centres: round tables, public debates, training sessions and seminars, exhibitions and other forms of public presentations.

3The three panels covered a number of topics such as: access routes to the European market, increasing the performance of SMEs, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the Horizon 2020 and COSME funding programmes, to which Moldova has recently acceded. At the same time, the success stories of some domestic companies, which managed to penetrate international markets, were divided: Vinitya Et Cetera”, SRL “Velitextil Plus”, SRL “Făguraș de Aur” and SRL “Benado-Prim”

At the end of the conference, the official award ceremony took place for the most important annual competitions in the LLL sector: “Best entrepreneur in the small and medium-sized enterprise sector” and “SME – Model for Social Responsibility”. The objective of organising these competitions is to identify and promote successful initiatives and to highlight the contribution of entrepreneurs to improving well-being (list of winners attached).

We would like to remind you thatthe event is part of the series of activities organised at national level, in line with the campaign coordinated by the European Commission. “European Small and Mijloci Week”carried out in more than 37 countries between 29 September and 5 October 2014. It aims to inform SMEs about the support measures offered by the EU and local, regional and national authorities, and to recognise the contribution of entrepreneurs to improving wealth, creating jobs, improving competitiveness and developing innovation.4

ODIMM is the only public, non-profit organisation dedicated to launching and developing successful businesses. ODSMEs help create business opportunities for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, train and enhance entrepreneurial culture and skills, facilitate SMEs’ access to financial and information resources, support the development of business support infrastructure and stimulate public-private dialogue.
