Tomato and vegetable producers in the Republic of Moldova will take over the experience of Turkish farmers in growing tomatoes under shelter as part of a study visit to Türkiye, which they will carry out with the support of the Agricultural Competitiveness and Business Development Project (acced) in October 2014.

The visit, under the general ‘Advanced tomato production and post-harvest technologies’, aims to study new tomato hybrids, modern greenhouse cultivation technologies, greenhouse construction schemes, harvesting and post-harvest practices (pre-cooling, sorting, packaging, storage). In the context of the irrigation project of the Compact Programme, Moldovan producers will also learn soil management and tomato fertilisation in greenhouses, integrated plant protection, irrigation and water conservation. The visit agenda also contains topics related to marketing techniques for fresh tomatoes.

Türkiye is currently one of the largest tomato producers on the continent, local farmers have advanced infrastructure to produce vegetables in protected areas, using the best agricultural technologies.
