On 15 August 2013, at the Anniversary of the Twenty Years of Peace Corps in Moldova, 50 American volunteers took their oath of honour in the cinema of Gaudeamus. Through this symbolic ritual, the volunteers committed themselves to the principles guiding the Peace Corps.

During the event, the new volunteers, who arrived in Moldova on 5 June after intensive preparation of 10 weeks, gave speeches in Romanian or Russian, dancing hora and singing Moldovan folk songs.

The ceremony marked the beginning of the two-year period that volunteers will spend living and working in the Republic of Moldova. Some of the newly arrived volunteers will work in schools, teaching English or health education, or in local health centres, providing health information. Others – in town halls, with various community organisations, in business incubators, with small business farmers and entrepreneurs.

We would point out that the 6 business incubators (Soroca, Leova, Ștefan-Vodă, Rezina, Dubăsari (Coșnița) and Sîngerei) set up by ODIMM with the support of the EU and the Norwegian Government include volunteers from the Peace Corps in Moldova. Volunteers assist incubator managers, consult and encourage resident entrepreneurs to expand their business by diversifying and promoting products, attracting investment, attracting new customers and building business partnerships. Their mission is to bring a new approach to society’s contribution to the economic development of the municipality; contribute to the deepening of people-to-people relations and cultural exchanges.
